Monogram The Bar

Bar in Chania Old Town, Crete

THE PROJECT
The project lies within a small, linear vaulted building in the old town of Chania. This peculiar space called for a clean design that could make the best out of the limited area. The design is based on the combination of three elementary geometries.

THE BAR
First comes the linear bar, that runs from the outer façade to the back of the room, and splits it into two parts, accentuating the perspective of the narrow space. Its’ profile consists of a folded stainless steel sheet, which provides room both for the customers’ seats and the bars’ utilities. This custom piece incorporates all the bar’s electrical wiring and plumbing, leaving the ancient shell and the stone floor intact. The bar is complimented with a custom-made linear lighting piece, which also contains the toilet’s ventilation and runs from the back of the room to the exterior façade.

THE MIRROR
The second piece is a zig-zag surface at the back of the space that sets the outline of the toilet and storage. Its’ space is designed to allow the movement of the staff around the bar, and is layered with mirror panels, in order to render it “invisible” to the customer’s eyes, “enlarge” the room’s length and make its interior perspective more intense.

THE CURVE
Last comes the curve. At the end of the bar, a convex surface sets the path around it, while at the same time provides space for storage. It is made out of a perforated steel sheet, that filters the customer’s gaze without constituting an opaque element in this limited space. The rest of the space remains as is, with plastered walls and the vault’s stonework visible to the eye.
