Sparti’s House is a building located in the historically low-income neighbourhood of Koum Kapi, Chania. It has gone through various phases in order to keep it habitable, and was in fairly bad shape. It consists of two separate houses, one on the ground floor, and one on the first floor, which were to be transformed into a short-term leasing and a permanent residence respectively.
Both floors were divided into very small rooms, and that was the first thing to address. The common concept is to create open spaces in order to expand the resident’s view of the houses. Another common theme is to preserve as much as possible of the different phases and materials that were used prior to the rehabilitation.
The ground floor apartment is divided into two spaces with a set of sliding panels, one containing the living room and kitchen and the other the bedroom. An extra asset requested by the client was the house to be accessible to disabled persons. Taking this into account, a long piece of furniture was designed running through both rooms, with all the appropriate specifications.
The upper floor has a slightly large height due to its roof, offering the opportunity to create a mezzanine in the middle, acting as either a study or guestroom. The whole interior design revolves around said mezzanine and its access. Underneath it is located the kitchen and dining space, with most of the kitchen’s amenities incorporated into the stairs’ structure.
Following the structural reinforcement of the building, its stone and brick walls are rendered with natural-dye plaster. Where it is deemed possible, the wall’s structure is exposed and highlighted. Generally, the interiors are dominated by off-white tones and wooden surfaces. Flooring and furnishing, as well as interior partitions, are made of oak wood, providing a warm ambience. The lower apartment is provided with an industrial floor in order to make it more durable. Finally, the mezzanine and stairs are made of white painted steel with a stripped-down design.
